Why tyres deserve more attention in the UAE
Tyre rubber degrades with heat and time, not only with distance driven. In a climate where road surface temperatures climb dramatically through the summer, a tyre with plenty of visible tread can still be past its useful life.
This is why the date code matters as much as the tread depth. Every tyre carries a four-digit code on the sidewall giving the week and year of manufacture – so 2325 means the 23rd week of 2025. Age is a real factor in whether a tyre is still safe.
Choosing tyres sensibly
- Match the manufacturer’s specification. Size, load index and speed rating are on the door jamb sticker or in the handbook. Do not deviate without a good reason.
- Check the date code before buying. New stock should be recent. A heavily discounted tyre that has been sitting in a warehouse for three years is not a bargain.
- Replace in pairs at minimum. Ideally all four. Mismatched grip across an axle affects handling and braking.
- Check pressures monthly. Heat changes pressure significantly, and under-inflation both wears tyres faster and raises the risk of a blowout at speed.
- Do not run tyres to the legal minimum in summer. Wet-weather grip and heat tolerance both fall away well before the wear indicators are reached.

Tyres are one of the first things to look at on a used car, and one of the easiest to check yourself. Worn or aged tyres are a legitimate negotiating point when buying, and a cheap fix that protects your price when selling – buyers deduct far more for bad tyres than replacing them costs.
